History

Stainless steel has been used in architecture for roofing applications for the last 100 years, and was particularly popular during the art deco period. The most famous example of this is the upper portion of the Chrysler Building in New York. Because of the durability of the material, many of these buildings still retain their original appearance.

Stainless steel is used for roofing and wall cladding for both practical and aesthetic reasons. Stainless steel is used today in buildings because of this durability and its ability to be made into aesthetically pleasing shapes.

Properties/applications

Stainless steel is an alloy of chromium, iron and sometimes nickel and other metals. It has excellent resistance to corrosion from air pollution which, combined with its smooth surface, means it requires very little maintenance. Ideal for construction it is highly versatile and blends extremely well with other materials including glass, timber, concrete and composites. Stainless steel is one of the construction industry’s most sustainable materials. Stainless steel roofs can be made using a variety of techniques, from the traditional standing seam method to batten roll and welding techniques.

Technical guide lines

  • Minimum roof pitch 3 degrees
  • Can be laid in lengths up to 13 meters without the need of expansion steps
  • Can be used for either warm or cold roof constructions
